Melamine is a stable compound with a symmetrical structure. In general the NH2 groups in melamine show an nitrogen-containing compound character. Melamine is a weak base and can react with various acids to yield melamine salts. Hydrolysis of melamine in strong acids or base solutions results in a stepwise replacement of the nitrogen-containing compound groups by hydroxyl groups forming ammeline, am elide and cyan uric acid.
