MMC and UMC Differences and How to Choose

Confirm the resin system before comparing grades

MMC means melamine moulding compound, based on melamine-formaldehyde resin; UMC means urea moulding compound, based on urea-formaldehyde resin. DONGXIN lists A5 MMC and A1 urea compound in its range. As a manufacturer, we recommend confirming the resin system, filler and grade specification before comparing quotations. A1 and A5 are commercial labels, not universal formulation standards, and moulding compounds are not pure melamine chemical powder.

Compare performance under the intended conditions

Both materials are thermosetting compounds that cure into rigid mouldings. MMC generally offers better heat and water resistance than UMC, making it a stronger candidate when repeated washing and surface durability matter. UMC can meet suitable requirements in less demanding exposure conditions. Fillers, modifiers and curing affect the result, so compare grade-specific hardness, water absorption, strength and electrical data using the same test methods.

Start tableware projects with a suitable MMC grade

For reusable melamine plates, bowls and serving trays, we would first assess a tableware MMC grade against the product brief. Confirm the intended food contact, contact time, temperature and cleaning method, then verify the finished article for the destination market. An A5 label or a raw-material report alone does not establish finished-product suitability. Melamine dinnerware should not be used to heat food in a microwave; moulding temperature is not a service-temperature rating.

Evaluate UMC for appropriate industrial parts

For buttons, selected indoor housings and electrical components, UMC may be a suitable option when the required performance is demonstrated. Our range includes UMC for electrical mouldings, but the exact grade must match the component requirements. Check insulation, tracking resistance, flame behaviour, moisture exposure and dimensional tolerances as relevant. MMC can also serve electrical applications, so select by the specification rather than by product category alone.

Validate processing and the surface system together

Changing from UMC to MMC requires a moulding trial; do not assume the same flow, shrinkage, preheating or curing settings. Check filling, demoulding, colour and the finished surface on the actual tooling. Where glazing is required, select compatible glazing powders: DONGXIN lists LG110 for A1 or urea-based substrates and LG220 for A5 melamine. A surface coating does not change the underlying resin system or establish suitability for a different end use.

Choose by the cost of an accepted finished part

Consider a buyer developing both a dinner plate and an indoor housing: we would evaluate each part separately, then compare candidate grades that meet its requirements. A lower powder quotation is useful only if moulding yield, cycle time and finishing costs remain acceptable. Include material usage, rejects and testing in the comparison. Send DONGXIN drawings, intended use, colour references, production conditions and sample requirements to discuss a suitable grade and trial plan.
