Choosing Between A1 and A5 Moulding Compounds

Start with the resin and the end use

At DONGXIN MELAMINE, we recommend choosing by application before comparing price. A1 commonly refers to urea-formaldehyde moulding compound, while A5 melamine moulding powder is based on melamine-formaldehyde resin. These compounds contain reinforcement and additives; A5 does not mean pure melamine chemical powder. Confirm the resin system and technical data sheet, because commercial grade labels alone do not define performance.

Where A1 can be a practical choice

Consider A1 urea moulding compound for cost-sensitive, non-food applications such as buttons, decorative parts and suitable electrical housings. Confirm strength, moisture resistance and service conditions for the specific formulation. Electrical parts also need application-specific insulation and flammability validation. Compare cost per acceptable finished piece, including moulding yield and rejects, rather than relying on the powder price alone.

Why A5 is the starting choice for dinnerware

For restaurant plates, hotel bowls and catering platters, we recommend evaluating food-grade A5 MMC first. Compared with typical UF compounds, A5 generally offers better heat and water resistance. Food-contact suitability still requires finished-product migration testing for the destination market and intended use. Review melamine and formaldehyde migration reports; an A5 label alone is insufficient. Melamine dinnerware must not be used for microwave heating.

An illustrative case with two product lines

Consider a buyer sourcing restaurant bowls and non-food hotel amenity trays. Our proposed route is A5 for the bowls, subject to food-contact testing, and a separately validated A1 formulation for trays holding toiletries. If trays will contact unpackaged food, reassess the material and compliance requirements. This example shows why similar-looking products may need different specifications, even within one purchasing project.

Validate the compound in the actual mould

Before a bulk order, run trials with the intended mould, colour and part thickness. Adjust preheating, pressure, temperature, venting and curing time to the selected grade. Compare filling, warpage, gloss and reject rates, then test finished parts under intended washing and use conditions. Compatible melamine glazing powder can improve surface finish, but cannot change the underlying resin type or replace compliance testing.

Send the details needed for a useful recommendation

To select A1 or A5, send DONGXIN MELAMINE your product drawing or sample, destination market, food-contact status, service conditions and monthly demand. Include press details, target colour and finish so we can discuss a suitable formulation and trial plan. Choose A1 where a validated non-food application supports the economics; prioritise A5 for dinnerware and approve the finished product before scaling production.
